Not only is it elegantly designed right into the instrument panel, but it operates much better than aftermarket controllers, making it easier to modulate the brakes for smooth, accurate stops. fresh styling gives the 2005 ford super duty pickups a more masculine, big-rig appearance. Inspired by ford's tonka truck concept, the new super duty trucks look like they're ready to get some serious work done. Payload capacities of up to 5800 pounds are available in the 2005 super duty trucks, with tow ratings of up to 17,000 pounds. The ford f-250 super duty competes with the dodge ram 2500, chevrolet silverado 2500, and gmc sierra 2500. The f-350, with its available dual rear wheels, competes against the 3500-series models from gm and dodge. None of these, however, match the super duty's top payload and towing capacities. the 2005 super duty pickups continue to feature first-class powertrains. Both of the v8 gas engines are upgraded for 2005. The standard 5. 4-liter v8 is now based on ford's modular v8 architecture and incorporates three valves per cylinder for better breathing, improved power delivery and cleaner exhaust. The 6. 8-liter v10 also gets the modular-based, three-valve cylinder heads, giving it class-leading horsepower and torque. The v10 and 6. 0-liter turbo-diesel now have electronic throttle control, expanding their utility in accessory applications. styling revisions for 2005 include a bolder, almost brutish front end and broader flanks. The frame is stronger, now boasting a fully boxed front section and thicker walls in high-stress areas. Wheelbase lengths vary by body style: 137 inches for a regular cab, 142 inches for a supercab short-bed, 158 inches for a supercab long-bed, 156 inches for a crew cab short-bed, and 172 inches for crew cab long-bed. all f-250 models come with single rear wheels. F-350 models are available with single rear wheels (srw) or dual rear wheels (drw). The latter, often called 'dualies,' are great for towing as they offer higher tongue-weight ratings, although they do give up an almost meaningless 300 pounds to the srw models in fifth wheel/goose neck maximum towing capacity. the base engine across the line is the new, 24-valve, 5. 4-liter v8. Power telescoping trailer mirrors are available on xlt 220) and standard on lariat and king ranch; they feature heated glass and integral turn signal repeaters. Manually telescoping mirrors are available 125) on xl. A power sliding rear cab window is available on the lariat 185). A sport package 1,085) for xlt supercabs and crew cabs adds chromed tubular step bars; body-color grille, bumpers, and door handles; sliding rear cab window; fog lamps; privacy glass; an exclusive two-tone cloth 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Other options include a moonroof 995), adjustable pedals 120), cruise control/tilt steering column 385), roof marker lights 55), and running boards. the towcommand package on the xl 330) includes the manually telescoping mirrors. On the xlt and lariat, towcommand adds the integrated trailer brake controller and heat to the telescoping mirrors 425). The integrated trailer brake controller is also available as a stand-alone across the line 205), as are upfitter switches 60). Also, towcommand requires the automatic transmission. the fx4 off-road package 225) adds skid plates and rancho shock absorbers; the steering damper. walkaroundford bestowed on the 2004 f-150 much of the brawny, no-nonsense look we liked about the previous generation of the company's f-250 and f-350 pickups. This meant the 2005 super duty line had to have its own spruced up, new look. The lower front fascia is beefier, too, adding to the impression of mass in motion. otherwise, the styling of the 2005 models doesn't differ much from the 2004s. The cab's dropped sill line gives it a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes climbing in easier, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump-truck bodies. A locking tailgate is standard. king ranch crew cabs are dressed up with body-color mirror housings and door handles and distinctive two-tone paint selections, lighted running boards and special king ranch aluminum wheels. The harley-davidson specials sport a unique, tautly meshed grille; color choices consist of black, black and orange, and black and gray; factory-applied flame graphics are a new option 675). the tow hitch receiver has been increased from 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches for increased towing capacity. interiorford super duty trucks are very roomy, with comfortable, spacious seats and plenty of hip and shoulder room. truck owners spend a lot of time in their vehicles, so ford's interior designers paid a lot of attention to comfort and convenience. The standard interior features a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging storage bin that can attach to the dash. Even the standard bench seats recline. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet conveniently mounted up in the dash to the right of the climate control switches. controls are big and easy to reach and manipulate. The instrument array is new, with large, round speedometer and tachometer, bracketed by oil pressure and fuel level gauges to the left and transmission temperature (on trucks with automatics) and coolant temperature gauges to the right. Optional power-adjustable pedals 120) are helpful for short-stature drivers (many women, for example), allowing them to sit a safer distance from the airbag in the steering wheel. switches for the optional trailer brake controller and towcommand are integrated into the lower dash beneath the drive-selector knob and stereo control panel, much nicer than attaching a controller with velcro or duct tape. 2011 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. For 2011, ford f-150 features an entirely new engine lineup, and most 2011 f-150 models come with electric-assist steering. smooth and quiet, the f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain like construction sites, farms and utility roads, and on the open highway. Its steering is nicely weighted and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,600-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. (the ford super duty line of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) two v8 and two v6 engines are offered, all with six-speed automatic transmissions. Standard on 2wd is a 302-hp 3. 7-liter v6. Other choices include a 360-hp 5-liter v8 for all cab/bed configurations, a 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8 on supercrew short beds, and a 365-hp twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 on all but regular cab/short beds. Several axle ratios are offered with each engine. a new 2011 f-150 xlt custom package slots between xlt and fx models. On the upper end are the king ranch, platinum and lariat limited models. The harley-davidson edition returns for 2011 with a 411-hp v8, the same engine now standard on the serious off-road raptor. Supercab trucks add higher fx and lariat trim to choices plus svt's raptor, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet). A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty package. The supercrew f-150, available with either the short bed or standard bed, drops the stx grade and adds king ranch and platinum derivatives while harley-davidson and lariat limited are supercrew short bed only. the f-150 xl (starting at $22,415) is a standard bed, regular cab two-wheel drive. It comes with 3. 7-liter v6, 17-inch steel wheels, black bumper/grille/mirrors, and vinyl upholstery and floor covering. More equipment is available, including 18-inch wheels, sirius radio, sync, cruise control, fog lamps and power mirrors. f-150 xlt (from $26,685) adds chrome for bumpers and trim, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic headlamps, carpeting, cruise control, power windows and locks, and better cloth upholstery. All manner of options are available on the xlt, including three wheel diameters, tailgate step, cargo management and towing equipment. f-150 fx4 and fx2 come with a 5-liter v8, black grille and body-colored bumpers, trim and mirrors. Options include infotainment and 17-inch (for more severe off-road use) or 20-inch wheels. Chrome trim and bumpers highlight monotone paint, and the lariat adds heated mirrors with signal repeaters and auto-dimming on the driver's and inside, dual-zone climate control, heated power leather seats with driver memory, leather wheel with redundant audio controls, tow package, sync, trip computer, and power adjustable pedals. Options include 20-inch wheels, heated/cooled front seats, sony sound and navigation, trailer brake controller, rear camera and park sensors, and moonroof. f-150 king ranch (from $41,790) is like a lariat with a different attitude. It adds two-tone paint and kr badges, unique wheels, mesh chrome grille, chaparral leather heated and cooled power captain's chairs with driver memory, running boards, and power folding, heated, signal outside mirrors with chrome caps. Options are essentially limited to a limited-slip differential, alternative axle ratios, 20-inch wheels, sony sound and navigation systems, moonroof, chrome tube running boards and remote start. f-150 platinum supercrew (from $43,600) gets a unique satin chrome grille, body-color bumpers and wheel lip moldings, 20-inch wheels, power-deploy/retract running boards, satin chrome tailgate trim, tuxedo-stitched leather power captain's chairs, wood grain and brushed aluminum trim, rain-sensing wipers, power folding/heated mirrors, and unique console. It comes only with the 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8. Most options are dependent on the model and other options, and many features are standard on more expensive models. In addition, prices of options occasionally vary by trim level. mechanical options include engine upgrades, alternate axle ratios, limited-slip or locking differentials, larger tires and upgraded wheels, skid plates, towing mirrors, snow plow prep (with 6. 2 v8), trailer brake controller 230), 36-gallon long-bed fuel tank, tailgate step, heavy-duty payload package, and ford works systems like an in-dash computer. Other upgrades include captain's chairs bucket seats with center console, power sliding rear window, rear-view camera (with or without navigation) reverse parking sensors, tri-coat or two-tone paint, moonroof 995), sirius radio, sound systems, remote start, and navigation. safety features that come standard include antilock brakes, stability control (advancetrac rsc), trailer sway control, frontal airbags, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Safety-related options include an integrated trailer brake controller, rear-view camera, mykey, and reverse park sensors. walkaroundthe angular lines of the ford f-150 mean it's easier to clean, easier to park, and gives maximum inside volume for outside space. Some bulge to the hood and large grille openings imply power, as does the higher altitude of 4wd models; many models have big graphics to ensure everyone knows what it is. The view rearward can be aided by extendable towing mirrors, a rear camera, and a power sliding rear window. We found the towing mirrors work very well. pillars between the doors (called b-pillars) and the rear hand-hold on the pillar may yield an awkward blind spot for some drivers, but everyone should appreciate the windshield pillars (called a-pillars) shaped to help preserve forward vision.

With two seats, a convertible top, and rear-wheel drive, it sometime feels like driving a vintage car, only it's brand new. ford introduced thunderbird as a 2002 model, but has revised it each year since. Electronic throttle control and variable cam timing improved performance, power, and fuel economy for 2003. Thunderbird's 3. 9-liter v8 now produces 280 horsepower and 286 pound-feet of torque, giving it stronger acceleration than the 2002 model. Traction control is standard on all models, and the instrument pod was redesigned. A select-shift automatic transmission was added that allows semi-manual shifting. Heated seats were added to keep driver and passenger toasty-warm, even with the top down in chilly weather. for 2004, ford has restyled the seats, and added three new wheel designs, new appearance packages, and new interior appointments. lineupthunderbird comes in deluxe and premium trim. The black accent package 295) features high-gloss black accents on the steering wheel and shifter. A partial color accent package 595) is available that places red, yellow, or blue inserts in the seats, steering wheel, and shifter to match the exterior color on selected models. Similarly, the full color accent package 800) extends the color accents to the lower instrument panel, center console and door trim panels. new for 2004 is a light sand appearance package 1000) for premium models that includes a sand-colored convertible top, seats, steering wheel, shift knob, and optional soft boot, plus cream-colored gauges. This package also features bronze metallic appliques on the instrument panel, door trim, center stack, shifter bezel, and scuff plates. A new pacific coast roadster 43,995) includes the light sand appearance package plus additional features. walkaroundthe thunderbird combines design features from early thunderbirds, including the original 1955-57 two-seater and the 1961-63 rocket bird. A v8 badge has been added to the front fenders of 2004 models to further the retro theme. Yet ford doesn't describe the 2004 thunderbird as a replica, or retro, because it has so much modern equipment in it, on it and underneath it. the exterior design is extremely smooth to the eye, although the wind tunnel says it has a drag coefficient of 0. 38, high when a mercedes-benz sedan cheats the wind with a rating of 0. 28. thunderbird's 6. 9-cubic-foot trunk is big enough to carry two golf bags, but that's about it. This car is made for what ford calls relaxed sportiness, a term we translate into cruising. It's sporty looking, it's rear-wheel drive, but it is not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination. interiortwo reasonably comfortable bucket seats are independently adjustable with power switches located on the side of the seat. But their range of adjustment is limited by the configuration of the cockpit, whose rear bulkhead is close behind the seats themselves. Long, sea foam green needles point the way instead of red, white or black indicators. The shape of the instrument binnacle reflects the gentle dome shape of the '55-56 original. The door panels feature the spread-wing thunderbird emblem. the center stack, that portion of the instrument panel at the center of the dash that carries the vents, the sound-system controls and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (hvac) controls, is taken almost directly from the lincoln ls. It's made up of five different small panels, though it appears that one nicely done cover panel for all five elements would have sufficed. The stereo is well designed, and the hvac controls use big buttons that are easy to operate. in such a small interior, everything falls readily to hand. For couples, especially, the interior is intimate and romantic. driving impressiondriving the new thunderbird an exercise in being seen. But how it goes is just as important, and it does pretty well in this category. There's plenty of power to drive the rear wheels and the traction control ensures a steady grip during acceleration. the engine is lifted directly from the lincoln ls, with only a few modifications to make it fit in the car. It's a small v8, only 3. 9 liters, less than 240 cubic inches. In fact, it's smaller than the standard v8 in 1955, but it produces more power and meets all the modern criteria for emissions and fuel economy. The 2004 thunderbird's v8 is rated 280 horsepower, more than one horsepower per cubic inch. The engineers have given it an interesting combination of air-intake rush and exhaust thunder. It burbles at idle like an old big-block v8, and that's part of the car's charm. ford's five-speed overdrive transmission is responsive. Expect 0-60mph performance in the range of 7 seconds flat, which ain't bad. If it weighed 500 pounds less, the thunderbird would be quicker; but even with its mostly plastic body panels, the new t-bird weighs almost 3800 pounds, and it feels like it. this is a comfortable cruiser on the interstate. A crossbeam behind the seats ties the structure together, and three steel x-braces are bolted to the underbody in the front, middle, and rear. The result is a body structure with the strength and stiffness that helps provide good ride quality and handling. The thunderbird isn't a sports car, however, and the suspension bobs when working out. Also, there is some cowl shake when driving over bumpy pavement. In a couple of mountain passes, where we drove way too fast for the blind corners and tricky turns, the car behaved very well in correction and recovery. Yes, there is body roll, but not much. America's most popular heavy hauler. introductionthe 2004 ford super duty pickups look like serious big rigs, and they are. The f-250 and f-350 are willing and able to pull their weight. The f-350, with its optional dual rear wheels, competes against the 3500-series models from gm and dodge. the super duty pickups feature first-class powertrains. The standard 5. 4-liter v8 gas engine was revised for 2003 for quieter and more refined operation. For 2004, the 6. 0-liter turbo-diesel v8 has been recalibrated for lower emissions. A 6. 8-liter gasoline v10 is also available. the super duty trucks are not the latest in truck design and don't offer the level of chassis sophistication of their counterparts from gm and dodge. So they don't ride or handle as well. however, ford continues to update its super duty pickups to make them more family-friendly. The base interior was recently upgraded and a power sliding moonroof is available for crew cabs. Several other new interior features further enhance comfort and convenience for 2004. Ford sells more pickups in the over-8500-pound gvwr range than gm or dodge. lineuplike most domestic pickups, the ford super duty is offered in more configurations than any normal human can count. And nearly 60 iterations are available in the f-350 (or 1-ton size). Any one of them can pull heavy loads. They offer more truck most consumers will ever need. (and when they aren't enough, ford builds bigger f-450, f-550, f-650, and f-750 trucks for the commercial market.) f-250 and f-350 are available in regular-cab, extended-cab (supercab) and crew cab configurations. Wheelbase lengths include 137 inches (regular cab), 142 inches (supercab short-bed), 158 inches (supercab long-bed), 156 inches (crew cab short-bed), and 172 inches (crew cab long-bed). all f-250 models come with single rear wheels. F-350 models are available with single rear wheels (srw) or dual rear wheels (drw). Xl models are pretty basic, with only a two-speaker stereo and fixed-interval wipers. They come with all the king ranch goodies plus 18-inch aluminum wheels and unique harley-davidson design cues inside and out. Color choices consist of black, black and orange, and black and gray. Prices range from $39,340 for a short-wheelbase f-250 supercab to $42,800 for a long-wheelbase f-350 crew cab. walkaroundford super duty pickups are arguably the best-looking heavy-duty pickups available. The new heavy-duty dodge rams are more stylish, while the gm trucks are conservatively styled. The fords have a brawny, no-nonsense look that we find very appealing. when the current generation of ford super duty pickups appeared in 1999, they conspicuously avoided the rounder, more aerodynamic look then used by the light-duty f-150. Then and now, the super duty trucks looked bluff-nosed and serious, with menacing, square-jawed front ends, brawny raised hoods and aggressive headlamps. Significantly, the all-new 2004 f-150 now looks more like its super duty stablemates. super duty's dropped sill line gives it a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes it easier to climb in, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump-truck bodies. A locking tailgate is standard. king ranch crew cabs are dressed up with body-color mirror housings and door handles, arizona beige wheel lip moldings, lighted running boards and special king ranch aluminum wheels. Three two-tone paint combinations are available: estate green, chestnut brown, or oxford white; each with arizona beige as the accent color. interiorford super duty trucks are very roomy, with comfortable and spacious seats and plenty of hip and shoulder room. truck owners spend a lot of time in their vehicles, so the designers at ford paid a lot of attention to comfort and convenience. The interior features a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging storage bin that can attach to the dash. Even the standard bench seats recline. Controls are big and easy to reach and manipulate. The only exception is the instrument panel dimmer, which is a bit hard to reach. Optional power-adjustable pedals 120) are particularly helpful for smaller drivers, allowing them to sit further away from the airbag in the steering wheel. two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet. The instrument cluster includes a transmission temperature gauge when an automatic transmission is ordered. passenger-side airbags offer a deactivation switch on regular cab and supercab models. The rear doors are 25 inches wide. They hinge on the rear pillars of the cab and swing out a full 90 degrees from the doorsill, a design that eases the loading of gear and passengers. Hidden vertical beams and a cross brace where the front and rear doors meet contribute to occupant safety. the rear seat cushion folds up and forward, and the seatback folds down to create a flat, steel loading surface, a perfect place to put tools and other heavy items that need to stay secure and out of the elements. All crew cabs except xl now come with grocery hooks, integrated cup holders and rear-seat head restraints. driving impressionford super duty's standard 5. 4-liter v8 is rated 260 horsepower and 350 pounds-feet of torque. Using computer analysis, ford engineers stiffened the engine block for 2003, reducing radiated noise by as much as 3. 1 decibels. the 6. 8-liter v10 600) is rated 310 horsepower and 425 pounds-feet of torque. Both gas engines are part of ford's triton series, and employ overhead cams for valve control. the 6. 0-liter powerstroke turbocharged diesel v8 is an expensive option 5,085), but it is rated 550 pounds-feet of torque at 2000 rpm, and 325 horsepower at 3300 rpm. That's more peak horsepower and torque than the 7. 3-liter turbo-diesel that ford offered until early last year. The new engine is also cleaner running and more economical. a six-speed manual transmission is standard on all ford super duty models. Its fenders don't seem to fill rural roads ditch to ditch as much as the dodge trucks do. Steering is precise. Handling is good, though not as good as the newer designs from dodge and gm.
